Turkey - Pakistan Relations, 27.11.2014
Turkey considers the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, with which it is bound with fraternal ties, as one of the prominent players for the security and stability of the region.
Turkey-Pakistan relations gain their strength from history. The support extended by the Muslims of the sub-continent to the Turkish Liberation War occupies a special place in the minds and hearts of the Turkish people. The Turkish Liberation War and its success in establishing a modern state afterwards has been a source of inspiration for the Pakistani people since August 14, 1947, the day the Islamic Republic of Pakistan emerged as a sovereign state.
Following the establishment of Pakistan, both countries extended each other their support during the most difficult times, while they cemented their friendly relations with frequent high level visits. More recently, the humanitarian assistance of Turkey provided to Pakistan following the 2005 and 2008 earthquakes further strengthened the sincere feelings of Pakistani people for Turkey. The large scale humanitarian and financial aid, which was prepared for addressing the real needs of flood-affected people, and delivered timely after the July-September 2010 flood disaster as well as the pioneering efforts of Turkey for the international aid campaigns for Pakistan, solidified the already existing perception of Pakistani people and government that Turkey is a true friend in times of need. Turkey believes that the steps to be taken to support Pakistan, should be realized with the guidance and leadership of the administration in Pakistan and continues its efforts accordingly. In this regard, the regional office of the Turkish Coordination and Cooperation Agency (TIKA) started its activities in Islamabad in March 2010.
The bilateral relations were institutionalized through the High Level Cooperation Council (HLCC) mechanism, which was established in 2009 and held its Third Meeting on September 17, 2013. The number of documents signed with Pakistan within the scope of HLCC in various fields exceeded 40.
The positive reflection of the excellent bilateral relations can also be seen in the international fora. Turkey and Pakistan are supporting each other in all international platforms.
Furthermore, considering contribution to the peace and stability of Pakistan’s region a priority, Turkey pursues an active and constructive role in multilateral processes regarding the region and takes the lead in the Turkey-Pakistan-Afghanistan Trilateral Summit process and the Regional Summits on Afghanistan.
However, the Turkey-Pakistan bilateral trade volume was 726 million USD for the year 2013. The excellent political relations between Turkey and Pakistan are not reflected enough in the economic field and the development of economic relations is the most important agenda item in bilateral relations.
Frequent high level visits taking place between the two countries contribute significantly to the furthering of relations between Turkey and Pakistan. Recently, the visit of our Foreign Minister, H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu, to Pakistan for the D-8 Council of Ministers meeting on December 19, 2013, and his official bilateral contacts, the official visit of our Prime Minister, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to Pakistan on December 23-24, 2013 as well as the visit of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, H.E. Nawaz Sharif, to Turkey for the Eighth Turkey-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Summit Meeting on February 12-15, 2014, have added momentum to bilateral relations, particularly in the economic field.
